I spent 17 years in the Red Sox front office and finished my baseball career as Acting GM of the New York Mets. Somewhere in those years I noticed something. We had gotten very good at the information. Projections, medicals, scouting reports, models for almost everything. The bad decisions kept coming anyway, and when I traced them back, it was rarely the information. It was the pressure in the room. The momentum. The voice that went quiet. The trade made because standing still felt worse than moving.
So every other week I take one decision and pull it apart: what the room saw, what it couldn't, and what one question at the right moment would have changed. I start with my own worst calls, because those are the ones I understand from the inside.
